Since 202 BBEMA has been monitoring the health of the eel grass meadows along the beaches and shores of the Bedeque Bay Watershed.
In partnership with Seagrass Net and the NS Ecology Action Center we are monitoring the impacts that climate change and human interactions are having on the health of coastal seagrass beds in an effort to preserve these vital seagrass meadows in our watershed.
Did you know? Eelgrass is a hero of the ocean! It cleans water, nurtures marine life, absorbs climate-warming carbon, produces oxygen, and protects our coastlines. Yet, across North America, eelgrass meadows are vanishing due to pollution, seabed disturbance, invasive species, and warming waters.
The decline of eelgrass impacts biodiversity, coastal erosion, and climate change, as it plays a crucial role in capturing CO2 from the atmosphere.
